My Top Ten Favorite Movie Soundtracks!
A score can make or break a movie, and unfortunately, many times a great score goes unnoticed. One thing I hate are soundtracks with only with the pop hits, and none of the score. Listed below are my top ten favorite soundtrack CD's. I like them not only because they are great pieces of music, they are great SCORES!

Cinema Paradiso (--Ennio Morricone)
Easily the best musical score ever written for a film in 20 years, certainly the best Italian score. Every cue recalls the best moments in the film, and reminds you of the laughs and the tears. I swear I've heard this soundtrack ripped off again and again in films, including Bridges of Madison County, but don't be fooled. This score is the real deal. Click on the link to hear a sample.

Music for a Darkened Theatre (--Danny Elfman)
Ever since Oingo Boingo lead Danny Elfman began scoring films, he has set a new standard for neo-classical/techno music. This COMPILATION CD has his best scores from such films as BATMAN, MIDNIGHT RUN, BEETLEJIUCE, DARKMAN, DICK TRACY, PEE WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE and BACK TO SCHOOL and more. It also includes his television themes to THE SIMPSONS and TALES FROM THE CRYPT. The CD contains several cues from each film, not just a simple overview. Also available, Volume II.

Pleasantville (--Randy Newman)
Pleasantville has two CD soundtracks, one with all the 50's songs, and this one -- the full Randy Newman score. Go hear a sample of cue #5, it's like your subconscious put to music. It gets inside your skin and puts you in a better mood, or to a simpler time.

The Spielberg/Williams Collaboration (Film Score Anthology) (--John Williams)
John Williams has done nearly ever film Spielberg and Lucas have ever done, as well as dozens of other classic scores, but the reason I think this COMPILATION is the best is because he has taken the best parts of the score from some of his best films, including JAWS, CLOSE ENCOUNTERS, E.T., EMPIRE OF THE SUN, 1941 and RAIDERS OF THE LOST ARK. It's like owning all of these film soundtracks for one low price.

Is Beautiful (--Nicola Piovani)
It's not Cinema Paradiso, but if want to know what comes close (without totally ripping it off), then this is your score. It also balances the comedy and drama in a beautiful way. Hearing the music without Roberto Begnini talking over it makes you realize that this Oscar winning score really deserved it.

Nino Rota Greatest Hits (--Nino Rota)
Federico Fellini's composer during his most prolific years. Here is a COMPILATION of all of those great score. Films include AMACORD, 8 1/2, LA DOLCE VITA, and a lot more. Most of these score are so famous, you'll know them all (like popular classical music).

This is another example of the score making the film more powerful. This music stands almost better alone than with the film.

North By Northwest (--Bernard Hermann)
Though I do love this score, if I could recommend all of Bernard Hermann's work in some sort of compilation, I would. Alfred Hitchcock's long time collaborator, he also did the score of TAXI DRIVER, CITIZEN KANE, TV's TWILIGHT ZONE, and lots more.
